Question: I have a 1996 mitsubishi eclipse rs. the head gasket blew, hass water in the cylinder and a piston broke off in the engine. My mechanic is estimating $2500 for parts and labor for a rebuilt engine. Is this a decent price?
Answer: Eric,
You can shop around for different estimates, and you may find a cheaper one, but the cost probably won't vary too much from the $2500 estimate. Since your piston broke off, you probably bent up your valves. You may even thrown off your timing and ruined your entire head. I'd recommend finding out exactly what needs to be replaced and shopping around for parts. Labor is probably going to be pretty much the same anywhere you go. Most mechanics charge between $50-$65 per hour. Dealership mechanics will charge about $75-$80.
Good luck!
