Subject: 93 Eclipse Tranny
Question:

I have a '93 Mitsubishi Eclipse 1.8, 5 spd manual tran.
The CV boots were shot, so I replaced the driveshafts. Everything went smoothly ... went exactly by the book. On it's first test drive I accelerated around a corner and I felt it slip twice, then make a whirring sound. After another block or two the tranny completely slips; no power to either side. When I put it in gear, I can hear something spinning, relatively quietly, inside the tranny, but absolutely nothing is transferred to the driveshafts.

If you did everything by the book, this definitely shouldn't happen. You may want to double check the axles that you purchased. If they were the wrong type, the inner ends may not fit to the spindle (or barely fit), and could have stripped and slipped out under hard acceleration. To be sure of this, you'll unfortunately have to pull the axles from the tranny again and inspect them. From the sound of it, this is what seems to have happened. If these are aftermarket axles, you may want to return them and consider purchasing OEM axles.
