Subject: Engine performance
Question: I'm dealing with a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse with about 40,000 miles. The engine sputters when gas is rapidly applied both in neutral and when the transmission is engaged. If gas is applied slowly there is no symptom. There is also an obvious gas odor from the exhaust when I accellerate rapidly.
Unfortunately there does not seem to be a manual available for this model. One person suggested I check the TPS. Even if this is a likley candidate I have no information on where to find this switch or how to test it.
Any help will be appreciated.
Answer: Tommy,
I have seen manuals available for '99 Eclispes. Both Haynes and Chiltons have availble manuals. Even if you just see one of those manuals for '95-'98 models, it should still be sufficient. There were very few changes between 95-99 models.
The TPS is definately a possible culprit. Its located on the throttle body on the upper, rear, passenger side of your engine. Its a round, flat looking thing covered in plastic. If you get a service manual, it will show you exactly where it is and how to test it.
A gasoline odor is not uncommon with Eclipses. Mitsubishi purposely makes their cars run rich to avoid possibility of detenation. I would recommend replacing your fuel filter if its been on your car for over a year. If you have a turbo model, you may have a vacuum leak somewhere in your system. You'll want a good flashlight and patients to check every little hose. Also check your spark plugs and plug wires. Replace your PCV valve as well. They are very cheap, easily replaced, and should be done every year. You may have a clogged EGR valve and/or dirty throttle body. A manual will instruct you exaclty how to do that as well.
You may want to think about having your timing belt replaced. It should be done every 45k-60k miles.
Good luck!
