Subject: clutch
Question:

Hi there, I have a 98 eclipse gst 5speed turbo with 630000 miles. Got a new clutch act 2100 put in not too long ago. Got a new master cylinder put in a few weeks back. I drove my car to work.. everything was working fine until after work. I went and start up the car.. i step on the clutch a bit harsh and heard a crack.. the car starts but can't shift to any gears.. when the engine is off the shifter has no problem, and shift to all gears.. than when i put the car into gear and start the car.. it still runs fine but just can't shift to any other gear.. and when i let it sit with the car on gear and holding the clutch pedal down, the car shakes acting like its going to die.. could this be a falting mastercylinder.. or could it be a neutral switch problem or any other problems?? if you have any clues please help me.. thankyou

Answer: Moua,
It sounds like your clutch is not engaging or disengaging properly. It may be due to your clutch master cylinder. The reason you can shift with the engine shut off is because your flywheel is not spinning. With the engine turned off, you should be able to shift through your gears without the need to even push on the clutch pedal.

I would have the master cylinder and slave cylinder checked out. Sometimes you can hear a loud crack when stepping on the clutch pedal from air in the clutch line. Too much air will prevent the clutch from engaging enough to shift.

It's also possible the thrust bearing that was most likely replaced when you had your clutch replaced had broke. Those rarely break, but it's possible. I would also advise you to read up on a subject of a problem that been seen on numerous 2G turbo Eclipses (95-99). Do an internet search on the term "Crankwalk". Crankwalk deals with a poor engineered crankshaft that moves laterally over time. The crankshaft should never move, and if it does, can cause all sorts of problems. Read up on that subject (because it's way too involved to get into here) and maybe that will give you other ideas on what may be happening with your car.
Good luck!
