Subject: Car will not idle under 1,000 rpm
Question: 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse all wheel drive, 2.0L, dohc, turbo, manual shift. 150,000 miles.
Answer: Jerry,
When you say your car won't idle under 1k rpm, does that mean that it will never go below 1k rpms ever, or does it mean that your car stalls if it idles under 1k rpms? It should idle between 800-700 rpms at normal operating temperature.
Either way, your problem sounds like either a clogged or leaking vacuum hose. The turbo models have many vacuum hoses and many can cause irregular idle if leaking or plugged. You should also have your throttle position sensor and idle speed control motor checked. Another common cause is a clogged PCV valve. If you haven't changed that with in the past year, now is a great time to do it. It takes about 10 minutes to do yourself and cost under $5.
Another notorious problem with your model of Eclipse is that the The 1G DSMs (90-94 Eclipse, Talon, and Laser) had faulty computer components. The capacitors on the board would leak and ruin the board over time. People would get all sorts of strange code readings and engine problems. You may want to have your ECU check by a qualified technician.
You may be due for a tune-up. An Eclipse of that age needs regular maintenance to keep it purring. I try to keep my GSX on a strict maintenance schedule. It has over 170,000 miles on it and it's still going strong.
Good luck!
