Subject: Engine
Question: We have a 2000 GT eclipse with a v6. My wife said that when driving it will start to sputter for a minute and the engine light comes on, and then it stops and the light goes off. The oil is fine and the mileage is 24000. What could be wrong? Thanks Kelly
Answer: Kelly,
A sputtering engine that causes the check engine light to come on usually means the car is on the verge of stalling. You may have a clogged fuel filter and/or a dirty air filter. If its a manual transmission, the clutch may not be disengaging when shifting. If its an automatic transmission, the idle may be set wrong.
I'd recommend taking it in for a tune up. I believe that car has a 3 year/30,000 warranty. Take it to the dealership to have looked out. Make sure they check the timing belt and the spark plugs as well as the filters.
Good luck!
