Subject: clutch/transmission
Question: I have a 1994 elcipse..i really never had any problems with it..What could cause the car to not go in gear when it is running, but it will when it is cut off?
Answer: Tina,
Hard shifting (or the inability to shift) can be due to a faulty control cable, poor contact or wear of synchronizer ring and gear cone, weakened synchronizer spring, or use of inadequate transmission oil. Your gears are spinning when your car is in moving, and if your synchoros are worn, you'll have a very difficult time shifting when the car is in motion.
You should also have your clutch examined. You may have a damaged clutch disc, pressure plate, or flywheel.
Good luck!
