Subject: eclipse gst with problem
Question: Hi Anthony, thanks for your fast reply. i appreciate it. chek this out, my mods are, the 20g, starion intercooler, turbonetics deltagate wastgate, hks blowoff, 3" downpipe and 3" all the way to the back with no catalytic, i have a k&n air filter, all the IC pipes are custom made and the inlets of the intercooler were made bigger, also an autometer boost gauge, the fuel pump is stock and injectors also. so I have boost at only 10psi wich used to work super fine. I dont think it is boostcreep, you should know that all these mods were made long time ago and it worked perfect. boost gets to 10psi and mantains steady but the car yust wont pull. it has always been at 10psi. if the turbo was bad or going bad it wouldnt spool right? I have noticed that the swooooosh!!! sound the BOV makes was louder before. this is a really nasty problem Ive got here man.
Im from Puerto Rico and there is no mechanic that i know of that works only on dsm, hope to read from you soon. thanks again.
Answer: Armando,
You have a well modded Eclipse! Thanks for the extra info and list of mods. Hopefully we can get your problem diagnosed some more.
If your turbo was bad, it can still spool, but can indeed weaken boost. Take the turbo inlet tube from your k&n filter to your turbo off and check the turbo shaft for any wobble. If there's play in the shaft, your turbo could be bad. Some say that only 'zero' play in the shaft is acceptable, but a tiny bit shouldn't harm things. You should also check if there are any chipped or bent fins on the shaft. That too will cause lack of power.
If all that is ok, I would then inspect your HK$ blowoff valve. Though suckers should give a loud swoooosh, but won't if there isn't sufficient pressure. So either your BOV has a problem, or you're loosing that pressure in your intake system before your BOV (air filter, turbo, intercooler, lower IC hose). If you suspect it is your BOV, invest in a 1G BOV. Those can handle 20 psi and can be hundreds less than an HK$. I've seen them on ebay for $50 USD.
If that's not the problem, I would definately look into getting an upgraded fuel pump. I'm not sure about the 2G models, but the 1G turbo Eclipses had a problem with the pump getting insufficient current from the battery. Some offered a rewiring kit for pump to remedy that.
With all those mods, you definately could be lacking in fuel. Those everything worked well for a while, you were putting LOTS of stress on the fuel injectors and pump. Living near sea level in Puerto Rico will increases those pressures as opposed to most DSMs I've dealt with in the US. Upgrade the pump and look into getting high capacity injectors.
Good luck!
