| Subject: | eclipse gst with problem |
| Question: | Hi Anthony, I own an 1997 eclipse gst, the problem is that the car wont pull like it used to do. it used to pull at about 3,000rpm now I can actually feel the car slow when it gets to 3,000rpm. sometimes I step on it and it stumbles or doesn't accelerate and i let go of the gas and step on it again and it goes. I have a mitsu 20g turbo with a starion intercooler, it was all working fine. I have checked for boost leaks in the IC pipes and found no leak, i have cleaned the IC, I changed the spark plugs and sparkplug wires, I changed the fuel filter and it was megadirty but did no diference changing it. im stuck with this anoying problem and i am desperate to fix it, even eclipse turbo stock go faster than mine. I need your help. and if there is something esle you need to know to help me fix this problem let me know. |
| Answer: | Armando,
A 20G turbo with a starion fmic can produce some serious boost. I hope before you hooked all that up, you made the necessary preparations for it. First, with that much air you are now putting into your intake, your fuel system must keep up. You may want to consider upgrading your fuel pump. Also, your fuel injectors may be working too hard. If you have 450cc injectors now, you may want to upgrade those to 550cc. Since you said you already checked for air leaks, I won't get into that area. But with all that air coming in, you don't want to have any restrictions either. The first big culprit is the air filter can. I will also assumed you removed the can entirely and add a K&N air filter (or similar). The Blow-off Valve on the 2G Eclipses is a cheap, little plastic one. It usually craps out at a little over 12 psi boost. Get yourself an aftermarket BOV, or search around for a 1G Eclispe BOV. Those were made out of steel, are much stronger, and can handle a boost of 20 psi. I will also assume you have a boost control (either manual or electronic) and an aftermarket boost gauge. Make sure none of those hoses are kinked. It may be possible you're building too much crankcase pressure as well. Pull out your pcv valve and check to see if its clogged. If so, buy a new one. They're cheap and easy to install. You may even want to try just pulling the hose off the pcv valve and just adding a breather filter (for off-road and track purposes only ;-) ) Make sure your throttle body is functioning properly. Take it off the car and fully clean it. Your EGR valve could be clogged as well. Remove it and clean it. Some even completely block off the EGR valve, which can help with a sputtering engine (for off-road and track purposes only ;-) ) The technical name for what I believe is happening is called Spiking and boost creep. An example is when your boost shoots up to 16, then 15, 14, 13, 14, 15, 16,17, etc... Boost creep is caused by either a leaky internal wastegate or when the internal wastegate can't handle the pressure you're running. an external wastegate eliminates boost creep. I will also assume you put an after market turbo-back system on your car. The car must "breathe" in and out easily. I have made a lot of assumptions about the mods on your car. Simply bolting
on a big turbo and fmic and not making other appropriate upgrades can
cause serious damage to your car. |
