Subject: Chirping
Question: I have a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse and I have noticed that a chirping noise has been coming from my engine only when I take my foot off the gas pedal and idoling. I took it in for an oil change and they said it was a loose belt and they tightened it, but now it is 2 months later and it is back. What is it and what should i do? would you be able to estimate the cost to fix it, if at all possible? thank you.
Answer:

Alison,
If one or more of your belts continues to slip, then you may need replace you belt tensioner. Depending on the type of engine you have (turbo or non-turbo) will determine the cost of replacement. If you have around 80,000 miles on your Eclipse, it's probably time to change all your belts and tensioner as well. If you have the turbo model, you should definately change your timing belt as well.

Dirty, oil, and moisture can get under your belts and coat your pulleys with a nasty film that can cause your belts to slip. Have your belts and tensioner checked and replaced if necessary. It's hard to give you a good cost estimate, but if all belts need to be replaced, and you have a turbo engine, you could be looking at a $300 repair bill.

I know that doesn't sound cheap, but it's worth it to take care of the small problems before they get bigger. And believe me, you don't want to know the repair costs and inconvience if they get any bigger.

Good luck!
