Tara,
I had just responsed to another user who wrote about a timing belt problem.
The Eclipse GS and GSX have 2.0 litre, Dual Over-Head Cam (DOHC) engines.
You can tell if you have one of these really easy by opening the hood
and look at the engine. It'll be written on there if it is. It is known
as an "interference" engine. It requires very precise timing,
and if that timing is off, there will be problems. If your timing is off
or your timing belt broke, your pistons will bang into the valves. This
can cause a very noisey engine. Those pistons hit the valves very hard
and will eventually destroy them.
If you want to repair this, be prepared to pay a lot of money. You will
want a very experienced mechanic. Do not take it to the local gas station
mechanic. They will probably not have enough knowledge to do such an intense
job. Your engine will probably need to be rebuilt. Estimated price to
repair, about $2000.
You might consider buying another user Laser, Talon, or Eclipse and use
your current Eclipse for spare parts.Have those valves checked first by
the mechanic. If your belt broke, there is little hope of survival by
the valves. But its possible they are still "good enough". The
owner's manual says to replace your timing belt every 5 years/60,000 miles;
even if it looks fine. I usually replace mine every 30,000 to 45,000 miles;
just to be safe. My Eclipse is almost 13 years old, and I want to keep
it at least 13 more.
Sorry to bring such bad news and I wish you the best.
