Question: 1992 Mitsubishi Diamante. Problem(s) with start-
ing car. We have checked out the following item(s): distributor;coil; electric fuel pump: timing;
and firing order. Still the car will not start and run under its own power. It will start if I spray starter fluid into the intake. What is causing this problem(s)?
Answer: Elbert,
Your problem may be caused by fouled spark plugs and/or plug wires, clogged fuel injectors, or a faulty Mass Air Sensor. By spraying starter fluid into the intake, you are allowing more air and highly combustible fluid make it's way to the plugs which may eventually allow it to start. Your car can start without all the spark plugs firing, but it will not run for very long without fully stepping on the gas.

If you've already checked all those items and everything appears fine, your problem may be with your car's computer. Read this article for further information:

If your ECU is faulty, you'll have all sorts of strange problems, and I have heard of your situation occurring. Have your ECU inspect by a qualified technician.
Good luck!
