Subject: high pitch whistle sound
Question:

2000 mirage, coupe, 5 speed, 103,000miles
bought used, been to shop twice because of high pitch whistle sound from engine
last time in shop, set timing higher rather than replace water pump (replaced once)
whistle sound back, louder than ever

any ideas?

You may have a bad bearing in your alternator. A bad bearing can produce a high pitch whine or whistle. An air leak in the intake system or crankcase ventilation system may also cause a whistle. If the shop you're bringing your car is unsuccessful in locating the noise, you may want to have another mechanic inspect it for you.
