Subject:

Transmission not shifting to lowr gear

Question: Hi,
I have a 92 mitsubishi diamante. It suddenly stopped shifting to lower gear and also when I press the OD it does not shift to higher gear either. Seems like it is stuck on the third gear. It does not even shift to lower gear if I manually put it to "2" or "L". The reverse works fine and also "Drive" works fine but starts with higher gear.
Thanks,
Mkhan
PS. you can post my question on the msg board. I would appreciate if you can let me know what may be the problem before I take it for repair.
Answer: Mkhan,
This problem may be as simple as having your transmission fluid flushed and refilled, or as complex as your planetry gears failing. If you gears are just not engaging, it may be due to the teeth on the gears not making contact. It's possible they got worn away from excess heat and friction. Transmission fluid is often neglected, and should be replaced every 30k miles.

I'd recommend you take your car to a transmission specialty shop. The trannies on the Diamantes are very tricky to work on, and most local garage mechanics will not have the tools and/or knowledge to diagnose or fix your problem completely. The dealership will be able to fix this, but it will come at a much steeper cost.
Good luck!
