Subject: Electrical Issue
Question:

Anthony,

This may not be in your expertise but lets give it a shot.

We have a 1995 Mit Diamonte V-6 DHOC with only 50k miles (it was my dad's). This weekend on an out of town trip it started to overhead. Troubleshooting on the spot, my best guess was the water pump. Not comfortable to make it home, I had a local national repair chain perform the replacement of the water pump which was costly because the timing chain drives the pump.

The car repair wasn't completed until closing time so we checked it out and left for home. On the drive home (and it was now dark outside), I noticed the interior lights flickering --- actually getting brighter and weaker. This continued unabated. So I pulled over and noticed all the tail lights showed the same flickering (didn't check the headlights --- too bright). The flickering is faint.

Now I am concerned that something occurred during the repair because I know that they had to also remove the serpentine belt to do the water pump repair and that serpentine belt drives the alternator. These lights did not flicker before the repair. Is this a co-incidence or is it possible that something during the repair has caused the problem? The lights did not flicker before this event.

Any input would be appreciated.

It sounds like the mechanic that replaced the water pump simply did not tighten the serpentine belt enough, and a loose belt can slip on the alternator pulley. This will cause flickering of all the interior and exterior lights. You can take the car to any local mechanic and ask them to check the tension on the belt and tighten if need be.
Good luck!
