Answer: Craig,
When you say, "I have to warm up my engine longer than usually. And if I don't the car would shut off on me", does that mean that:
(1)you have to turn the key longer for the car to start?
(2)Or does it mean that the car will start, but if you put it into gear, it will stall when step on the gas?
If (1) is occuring, you may have a dying alternator or battery. Have your battery load tested. Most auto parts stores will do this test for free. They will determine if the battery is bad. Your starter may be weak as well.
If (2) is occuring, you may have the incorrect oil weight in your engine. Your owners manual will tell you the correct weight of oil to use in your engine. It is also possible your thottle body plate is sticking and may need cleaning. Its generally easy and quick to have this cleaned.
If you live in a very cold part of the world, a car will definately be more difficult to start in the winter. If you have too heavy of oil in your car, it'll be too thick to flow through your engine. Until that oil warms up enough, it will not properly flow through your engine, and your engine will most likely stall.
I hope I was able to answer your question. Good luck!
