Question: We were driving the car about 30 mph and the check engine light came on. The car died and there was a smell--somewhat like burning plastic. The car cranked again briefly for just a few seconds and then died again. The engine turns but no fire. Is it the timing belt?
Answer: Richard,
It's possible that your problem is your timing belt, but you probably would have heard your belt slipping before you smelled it. It is also possible that one of more of your spark plug wires has worn out. When the plug wire wears down, they can become extremely hot and the rubber jacket could start to melt.

If everything under the hood looks fine, your problem may be with your car's computer itself. Read this web page for further information:

Have your ECU inspected, and you may find your problem.
Good luck!
