Subject: Reset Drive Cycle Computer
Question: I have a Mitsubishi Montero LS 1993. I removed a dead Battery from the vehicle for several hours, but when I installed the new battery, the vehicle stalls out when I drive it. This problem has happened before last year, and a auto mechanic reset the drive cycle computer. How do I do this myself?
Thanks.
Answer: Ronald,
I've never heard of a "drive cycle computer". There's only two computers I've ever heard of on the average car. One is the Engine Control Unit (ECU). And if you have an automatic transmission, there is another computer called the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). But regardless of computer in the car, if the battery dies, the computer will be reset automatically. That should have nothing to do with your battery going dead.

If you put in a brand new battery and the it went dead while you were driving, that is due to a poor ground, or more commonly, a bad alternator. If you have an AutoZone in your area, you can ask them to test your alternator, and they will do it for free. Try that first to confirm your alternator is good or bad. If it's the original alternator, there's a good chance it has worn out.
Good luck!
