Subject: Engine Upgrade
Question: 94 Misubishi Eclipse 1.8Liter engine, manual
I'd like to upgrade the engine to a 2.0 liter in order to go turbo. Do the wiring harnesses match? Would I need to upgrade the transmission as well. Are the motor mounts the same. If this isn't a feasible upgrade what can I do to get better horsepower and speed from my existing engine.
Answer: Greg,
The amount of work you would need to drop a 2.0L turbo engine in would be a LOT. The harnesses would not match up, and your transmission would not be able to handle all that horsepower. You'd burn out your clutch and flywheel very quickly, and you'd most likely wear down your synchros prematurely. And the motor mounts are different.

If you want to add a few HP mods to your 1.8L, the best thing to do is let it 'breathe'. You can get a cold-air, more free flowing air filter, and you can put a larger cat-back system on it. That may be able to get you another 20HP or so. But do your research. Once you make one upgrade, it can negatively effect other stock components.

Even regular maintenance can bring back lost HP. If you're up to it, remove your throttle body and upper intake manifold and clean them really good with some carb cleaner from your local auto parts store. All the oily residue and carbon deposits that builds up on the you intake system can severaly reduce HP. Just don't fall for the gimmics you see on info-mericals that promise HP increases. They don't work.
Good luck!
