Subject: Mitsubishi gallant timing chain
Question: 1993 Misubishi gallant manual.
I had the timing chain replaced a year and a half ago. It broke down yesterday and the same mechanic is telling me it is again the timing chain and say's it will cost $800 (again)to do the repair. Is this reasonable???
Answer: Angie,
From my understanding, the '93 Galants had timibg belts, as opposed to timing chains. Timing chains rearly break, but timing belts can break if installed improperly or other complementary timing belt components were not replaced during the timing belt install.

Unless other engine components are needed to be replaced, $800 is too much money for a timing belt replacement. Even the dealership may charge you $500 at most. I would call around to different mechanics, and even call your local dealership and get an estimate for a timing belt replacement.
Good luck!
