Subject: oil pump prime
Question: 92 talon no oil pumping to top of head
after removing the mpi fuse and cranking should the oil come to the top before reinserting the fuse, or does the fuse need replaced first and if no oil; comes up is the pump just bad because this may end up being the start of the whole problem and how can you tell if the pump is bad?
Answer: John,
Cranking the engine without the MPI fuse should bring oil to the top of the engine. You may see proof of oil on the exhaust cam when you take the oil cap off the valve cover. But if you pump is working properly, the pump is primed and you should be ok if your head and valve train were pre-coated with oil when the rebuilt head was installed.

If no oil is being pumped, then you may have a bad oil pump. There's no easy way to tell if the pump is bad without removing it. The oil pumps on Eclipses don't go bad too often, but you may want to pull it to check. Also, check your pressure relief valve on the oil filter housing. If that valve is not set correctly or is faulty, you won't get enough oil pressure.
Good luck!
