| Subject: | Synthetic Oil |
| Question: | I have a 2003 Mitsubishi
Lancer at 10,000 miles I changed the oil with Mobil 1 systhetic oil.
I was told that synthetic oil can go longer than 3000miles between
oil changes. If so, when should the oil be changed again? |
| Answer: | Kenneth, Motor oil is only as good as the oil filter you install. You could buy the best sythetic oil on the market, but it won't last long with a cheap oil filter. If you run Mobil 1 (fully synthetic), then use a Mobil 1 oil filter. There filters are very good, and will keep the oil entering your engine nice and clean. With Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 oil filter, you should be able to safely
drive 6,000 miles between oil changes. If you do an average of 12k
miles per year, change your oil twice per year (beginning of spring
and beginning of fall). If you average more miles than that per year,
or you do a lot of stop-n-go driving, change your oil every 5,000
to be safe. Those synthetic oil and filters are expensive, but they
are the best things you can use to keep your engine running for a
LONG time. |
