Question: i have a 1996 mitsubishi mirage 2.0l coup manual. i have never had a problem out of the a/c untill this year when it quit working everytime i turn on the compressor it blows the fuse under the hood the fan works great its only when i turn on the compressor i have read out the wire harness from the fuse box to the switch and it all checks good do u think it could be the compressor shorting out or do i have a wire proble some were else thanks
Answer: Chris,
I have heard of this problem happening before. Many times when I've heard it, it turns out that car's battery was put in backwards at one point; or somehow there was a short across the battery. But it can also happen due to a poorly grounded connection to the compressor. Or as you may have suggested, the short may be in the compressor somewhere.

When something shorts out every time as you described, most likey there is a poorly grounded wire or short leading from the fuse box to the component. I'm not sure of the difficulty of the job would be to remove the compressor, but you may want to have it checked out by a qualified mechanic. Once the compressor is out of the car, it is much easier to check to see if it is an internal problem.
Good luck!
