| Subject: | What makes my car stall when put in gear |
| Question: | Recently purchased
a Mitsubishi 3000GT, 91, auto, and it stalls most of the time when
you put it in gear. A mechanic said after 2 days of trying to figure
it out that it may be the torque converter. The Mitsubishi dealer said
over the phone that it was the computer chip. The car supposedly has
a new computer for the engine and the transmission. I don't know which
direction to go. Please help!!! |
| Answer: | Justine, That's good that the computer for the engine and transmission was already changed. I doubt that is your problem now. The torque converter is definately a possibility. If your car is in Neutral or in Park and your car idles fine (should be around 1000 RPM), then your problem is most likely transmission related. If your car idles very slowly when standing still, then you may have an idle problem, and not enough fuel or air is getting into your engine. Have your mechanic focus closely on your transmission. Those transmission
are VERY difficult to work on and you want to be sure your mechanic
can handle the job. If you get the feeling that your mechanic is
not qualified for such a difficult job (the guy has spent over 2
days looking at the car and can't figure it out), have a Mitsubishi
mechanic inspect your tranny. It may save you a lot of money in the
future to get it fixed 100% the first time. Plus, all new dealer
parts installed are under warranty. |
