Subject: What Did They Do?
Question: My husband has a 1994 3000gt, pretty much stock and with an automatic transmission.
The problem began when he had the transmission fluid changed.
Immediately after the service(tranny fluid change), the car began to stutter and jerk in 1st gear, that is just getting going or slowing down to a stop.
The shop says sorry, that's it.
What possible things could have been done, overlooked....etc. to have caused this problem?
The car ran just fine before this, he just wanted it to be perfect...
Thanks so much!
Answer: Kelly,
Its possible the folks that changed the tranny fliud either put in the wrong type of fluid, or put in too much or too little fluid. There is a dip stick made specifically for the transmission fluid you can check the fluid level. If they put in the wrong type of tranny fluid, there's not much you can do, but get another fluid change. Sometimes these garages will uses the same kind of transmission fluid regardless if you have a manual or automatic transmission. That can really hurt a transmission to have to wrong fluid.

The absolute best way to do an automatic transmission fluid change is to drain the fluid completely (this can take up to a couple hours if the fluid is cold and the shop does not use an air compressor) and replace the transmission fluid filter (usually just a small screen).

There really isn't too much you can screw up by doing a transmission fluid change. I've done several in my own driveway and never had a problem. If the shop you brought your car to only did a tranny fluid change and nothing else, this is a tough one to solve. If you want to be sure, take the car to transmission specialty shop and ask them for a complete transmission fluid change. And insist they drain the old fluid completely, replace the filter and use the correct grade of transmission fluid.
Good luck!
