| Question: | Anthony, hope you can
help me with this. At highway speeds 60/70MPH there is a noise under the dash behind the steering wheel that sounds like a bad spedometer cable. Does it at all times, with brakes on, in nutral, slowing down or speeding up. Do these cars have a spedo cable or are the electronic? What do you thing it might be?? |
| Answer: | Richard, The 3000GTs can have either mechanical or electrical speedo cable. Typically, the turbo models will have the electronic speedos. You will know if the noise truly is the speedo cable if your needle shakes or seems way off. If you've upgraded the tires and/or wheels on that car, you're speedo reading could be off as well. Indeed, a noise that seems to come from behind the steering column does sound like a bad cable. If you can determine the cable is fine, there may be a couple of other things to inspect. Check your CV boots. If they are cracked and/or grease is leaking out of them, your CV joints may be going bad. Along those same lines, if the boots have gone bad, and the joints are going bad, your wheel bearings may be shot as well. Since all those components are basically tied to the steering column, that's where the noise could seeming be coming from. |
