| Answer: | Jon, I'm not too familiar with the 2G Eclipse fuel gauge sending units. I have just replaced those in 1G models ('90-'94). From my experience from AWD models, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump assembly. You don't have to drain the tank, but its definately the safest thing to do. You'll have to releave the pressure in the fuel system before you work on or remove anything from the fuel system. Most auto shops sell inexpensive service manuals for your car. If it indicates your sending unit is part of the fuel pump assembly, you need to remove the assembly, and you may be able to free up the sending unit yourself. If its really stuck, you may need a whole new assembly. That too is not cheap. I know its annoying to have your gauge only read 1/2 tank, but if everything else is working and you don't want to put any more time or money into the car, try to ignore it. Depending on any modifications you've made to the car, you'll probably be getting around 20-25 MPG under normal driving conditions. You may just want to live with it. I know the turbo-AWD models can be very costly, but its also one of the most powerful vehicles on the road. If you keep the car in good working order, you'll be happy seeing Mustangs and Cameros in your rear view mirror ;-) Good luck! |
