| Subject: | fuel gauge reads 1/2 when it is full |
| Question: | I have a 1995 eclipse gsx awd turbo my problem is when i fill up with gas my gauge only reads 1/2 tank and it takes awile to get to 1/2 sounds like sending unit to me what do you think. I just had to replace complete wiring harness, cluch, hub&spendle cv axle & slave clylender. Thanks |
| Answer: | Jonathan, Right on... 90% of inaccurate fuel gauge readings are caused by faulty sending units. Either the floats get stuck, the wiper is sending the wrong resistance reading, or the bimetallic strip attached to the gauge is not heating up enough. The metals that make up the strip expand and contract when they are heated or cooled. Each type of metal has its own particular rate of expansion. The two metals that make up the strip are chosen so that the rates of expansion and contraction are different. When the strip is heated, one metal expands less than the other, so the strip curves, with the metal that expands more on the outside. This bending action is what moves the needle. I doubt any of the replacements you mentioned caused this problem. Its possible the replacement on the wire harness is a factor in the incorrect readings, but there's not much you can check. The sending unit is a pretty simple device. Next time you get gas, don't fill the tank all the way up. You may be able to reset the sending unit. Good luck! |
